Hello, Greetings, and Welcome to my bit of the World Wide Web.
My name is Roy Burkhead, and I’m a writer, editor, and professor. Oh, and I’m the founding editor and publisher of 2nd & Church. My writing career has taken me from encrypting classified messages for the military and covering school board meetings for a small county paper to moving documentation from traditional printing outfits to print-on-demand operations and publishing literary journals. Use this site to learn more about my credentials, view some of my writing samples, and—of course—read the back issues of 2nd & Church.
What's been happening over the last few months?
Recently, I published the Southern Food issue of 2nd & Church. Currently, we're on a sabbatical for the rest of this year while I finish my first novel. Oh, Brittany Eldridge (our associate editor) will keep this site populated with fresh literary content, thanks to our business partners over at JKS Communications, and she may have a few surprises in store for our readers in the months to come, as well.
Last year, I finished editing Go for Orbit, the memoir of Former Astronaut Rhea Seddon. The book was published in the summer of 2015, and it’s in a third printing. Click here to order a copy.
I'm still teaching an online section of English at Western Kentucky University. And I continue to attend local literary events throughout Middle Tennessee as time allows. In May, I’ll participate in a publishing panel with the Chattanooga Writers’ Guild.
7 Minutes With...
Last year, Roy Burkhead had the opportunity to sit down with Nashville novelist J.T. Ellison for her on-going interview series entitled, "7 Minutes With..." Click here to read the interview! (Note: Authors J.T. Ellison and Mary Laura Philpott took the reins as hosts of A Word on Words in October, 2015!)
Creative Writer & Editor
A Kentucky native and longtime Nashvillian, Roy has published his journalism, poetry, and prose in such publications as The Tennessean, The Hendersonville Star, The News Examiner, The Trunk, The Record, Muscadine Lines: A Southern Journal, The Tennessee Writer, Popmatters.com, the British Web journal Chapter&Verse, and-of course-2nd & Church, but he is perhaps best known as a passionate promoter of the arts throughout middle Tennessee. After studying creative writing in London, England and earning a MFA in Writing from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, he founded The Writer's Loft (now known as MTSU Write), a creative writing program at Middle Tennessee State University, as well as created, edited, and published the program's literary journal, the Trunk. For the program's first four years, he promoted the written word by establishing public readings, panel discussions, and workshops throughout middle Tennessee. More recently, he founded and published 2nd & Church, a literary journal that celebrates writers, poets, and readers.
Corporate Writer & Editor
Roy has been a professional writer since 1986, when he joined the United States Navy and worked as a cryptologist for four years. After earning an undergraduate degree in Print Journalism with a minor in English, he took a position as a general assignment reporter for a small paper in rural Tennessee. Then, the Internet and its World Wide Web arrived. In 1994, he combined his technology training from the military with his reporting skills and spent the next two decades writing in the corporate workforce in such positions as technical writer, project manager, marketing coordinator, marketing director, and Webmaster.
